PlayStation 5 First Details Revealed: Specs, Backwards Compatibility and More

PlayStation have officially revealed their plans for their next-generation console, which will be launching some time in 2020.

Website WIRED held an exclusive interview with Mark Cerny, lead system architect for PS4 and Sony’s upcoming next-gen console, in which they sat down with Cerny and was given a demonstration of the hardware in action on a current devkit version the console.

Cerny revealed to WIRED many of the systems features including its beefy specs sporting AMD Ryzen and Radeon Navi Architecture technology with an SSD 19x faster than the PS4, native backwards compatibility with PlayStation 4 games and more!

Here are some of the highlights from the WIRED article (linked below):

  • CPU: 8 core AMD Ryzen based on 7nm Zen 2

  • GPU: Radeon Navi based

  • Raytracing capabilities

  • Supports 8K resolution

  • Backwards compatible with PlayStation 4 games

  • A new PSVR platform has been hinted at, current PSVR headset will work with the console

  • Supports physical media (disk drive confirmed)

  • Has an SSD (example of Spider-Man running on next-gen hardware, fast travel load reduced from 15 sec to 0.8 sec)

Cerny reiterated that the console won’t be launching in 2019, making a 2020 release date far more of a possibility. With Microsoft expectedly preparing to reveal news about their next gen system at this years E3 and with Sony confirming they will not be attending E3, it seems this early (and unexpected) newsdrop is to try stay ahead of Microsoft in the next-gen war.

One of the biggest takeaways from this reveal is the confirmation of PS4 backwards compatibility, but not only that it supports it, but that the console seems to drastically improve the games aswell. This could be huge for current gen games which either suffer extremely long load times (Anthem) or performance issues, but also ensures live-service games like Rainbow Six Siege and Fortnite can be supported well into the next generation.
