Grand Theft Auto V Sells Over 90 Million Copies, Most Profitable Entertainment Product Of All Time
Time and time again, Grand Theft Auto V will remain in Top #10 best selling charts around the world despite launching almost five years ago, sometimes even topping the charts despite brand new game releases, and that doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon.
According to analysts, Grand Theft Auto V has now sold over 90 million units, raking in around $6 Billion from game and microtransaction sales since its September 2013 release. This means that GTA 5 has now made more money than any other entertainment product on the market including movies, books, music and other video games.
This is a monumental achievement for both Rockstar and gaming culture as a whole, proving how mainstream video games nowadays. However, such an achievement like this shows how successful microtransactions have been for Take Two and 2K, which could prove troubling for future Rockstar releases - mainly Red Dead Redemption 2.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will undoubtedly feature a live-service online open world akin to GTA 5's (considering the original did it first), however the extent the company will go to to monetize it is currently unknown.
Microtransactions play a key part in GTA 5's $6B income as its online portion has become excessively grindy while frequently adding new free DLC content costing players several in-game millions. No doubt Red Dead Redemption 2's Online will be the same later in its lifecycle, however I'm hoping it remains fair and balanced.
