Report: Grand Theft Auto 6 In Early Development, Will Be A "Moderately Sized Game" Expanded With Updates

Many rumours have been spread about when we might see the next Grand Theft Auto title, with 2020 marking seven years since the release of GTA V. However, according to a new report from trusted gaming journalist Jason Schreier, we have more insight into the title.

Schreier’s report documents the work life of Rockstar employee’s 18 months after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 — something which was polarizing back in 2018 due to the company boasting about crunch and the horrendous 100 hour work weeks. The report discusses how the studio has made significant changes since then and how it affects their next title: a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.

According to the report, Rockstar’s internal management has laid out a plan to help mitigate stress and crunch for developers working on the next Grand Theft Auto game. The plan is to “start out with a ‘moderately sized’ release that is then expanded with regular updates over time”, with the report mentioning that it would still be a large game on release by Rockstar’s standards.

Even more interesting is that, according to Schreier’s report, “Rockstar’s next big project” (presumably Grand Theft Auto VI) is still only in the early stages of development - despite Grand Theft Auto V shipping over half a decade ago.

Several Rockstar Insiders including Tez2 and Yan2295 tweeted about the news, stating that “there is absolutely no way GTA 6 is still in early stages” with the title more likely to be in early testing stages, and that the title is supposedly “halfway done” and looking to follow the same development schedule as Red Dead Redemption 2.

Back in March 2016, it was reported that full production had begun on Grand Theft Auto 6.

What do you make of this report? With Grand Theft Auto Online receiving sizable free content updates - most recently being the The Diamond Casino - over the last 7 years, it’s not surprising Rockstar plans to do this with GTA 6. The question is, what will that mean for the base game on launch?
